History:
1942 to 07/1943, Landing ground for No.10 Group, RAF Fighter Command.
01/08/1943 to 10/1943 became an 8th USAAF Tactical Air Depot for C-47 maintenance and repair.
10/1943 to 03/1944 transferred to 9th USAAF for C-47 maintenance. The grass airfield was unsuitable for C-47's and 12/1943 Zeals changed to 5th Tactical Air Depot for P-47 Thunderbolt maintenance. Metal track runways were laid but the site was still unsuitable due to heavy rains. Unit transferred to Chilbolton.
03/1944 to 03/1945, No.10 Group, RAF Fighter Command with Mosquito night fighters. When this unit moved to Europe after D-Day the Station was used for glider training with Masters and towing Hotspur gliders.
18/05/1945, Taken over by the Royal Navy and commissioned as HMS Humming Bird. 05/1945 to 08/1945, Fleet Air Arm 790 Squadron with Firefly and Oxfords from Charlton Hawthorne, moved to Dale. 04/1945 to 09/1945, 760 Squadron Corsairs, moved to Lee-on-Solent. 09/1945 to 01/1946, 759 Squadron Corsairs and Wildcats from Yeovilton. 09/1945 to 12/1945, 704 Squadron. 07/1945 to 09/1945, 771 Squadron from Scapa Flow, moved to Gosport.
Airfield closed 01/01/1946 and Royal Navy left 07/06/1946, airfield then returned to agriculture.
